11 Years of Savanne: Reflections of a Food Safety Consultant

Marking 11 years in business, the launch of my new website and the courage to be fully myself

I graduated at 22 with a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology, stepping straight into the world of food safety the same year. I didn’t know it then, but that decision would shape the next three decades of my life.

I was young, curious and endlessly fascinated by how science, systems and human behaviour come together to protect consumers. My brain was a sponge, soaking up everything, questioning everything, hungry to understand the “why” behind every standard and clause.

Thirty years later, that sponge continues to absorb. If anything, it’s become sharper, more intuitive and more discerning.

And now, as my company celebrates its 11th year and I launch a new website that finally reflects all of me, I find myself in a chapter that feels both surreal and deeply earned.

Clients invite me into boardrooms to settle debates. Leadership teams ask me to interpret standards and bring clarity. Businesses trust me to align their thinking when internal opinions collide.

Even after all these years, there’s a quiet moment of surprise at the trust placed in my judgment. It’s not because I doubt my capability, but because it’s striking to see how far this journey has brought me and how companies rely on my experience to navigate complexity and bring clarity.

Entering My Golden Era of Food Safety Consultancy

At 53, many of my peers talk about slowing down or planning for retirement. But I’m not slowing down; I’m embracing my golden age! This is the time when my experience and curiosity go hand in hand and my confidence is steady, not overpowering. I know exactly what I bring to the table and still feel the thrill of learning something new every single day.

I don't want to stop doing what I still love. I want to keep growing within it. This new website and rebrand isn't just a fresh look, it's a declaration: I'm still here, still growing and still deeply committed to this work.

Bringing My Heritage into My Professional Story

This new website also incorporates elements from my Mauritian background, British upbringing and the cultural mix that has influenced my perspective long before I ever worked in a factory, lab or boardroom. Some may wonder what heritage has to do with food safety consultancy. For me, it’s everything.

My heritage has taught me:

  • to value community and connection
  • to respect food as culture, identity and care
  • to see systems through the lens of people, not just processes
  • to communicate with warmth, clarity and diplomacy
  • to blend precision with humanity

These qualities are not separate from my work, but are fundamental to it. Including my heritage in my brand is authentic and true to who I am. It’s a reflection of the consultant I am today, shaped by more than just qualifications and experience, but by culture, family, values and the way food has always been a part of my life.

When Expertise Still Feels Surprising

Being a lifelong learner brings a certain humility. You never feel like you’ve reached the end, because you’re always growing and learning new things.

Somewhere along this journey, I also reached a milestone that still makes me pause. I successfully attained approval to audit against all 18 categories of the BRCGS Food Safety Standard.

It’s a level of breadth and technical depth that I once aspired to achieve and now it sits quietly but confidently within my professional toolkit. It’s a credential I earned through decades of immersion, discipline, curiosity and the cultural lens that has shaped how I see food, people and systems.

So, when clients see me as the technical expert, the one who can interpret a clause, align a leadership team or bring calm clarity to a complex situation, there’s a moment where the younger version of me looks on in awe.

Yet here I am, carrying an expertise that feels both deeply earned and still slightly surreal as my mind continues updating its story.

Why Continuous Learning Strengthens Expertise

One of the biggest misconceptions about expertise is that it’s a fixed destination. It’s actually more like a continuous cycle: learning, applying, refining and then learning again. The fact that I still learn new things daily doesn’t make me less of an expert, it makes me a better one.

Clients don’t seek me out because I have all the answers. They come to me because I know how to think, interpret, navigate complexity and bring order and calm to situations that seem chaotic or uncertain.

That’s the real value of experience: not having all the answers, but knowing how to find the right ones.

Updating My Story After 11 Years in Business

As I mark 11 years working as a food safety consultant and launch a new website that showcases my work, identity and heritage, I’m sharing an updated version of my story. I want to honestly reflect on where I am today:

  • I am trusted by companies to bring clarity and alignment
  • I am sought out for my technical judgement and calm authority
  • I am still learning, still evolving and still energised by my work
  • I am in the most powerful chapter of my career
  • I am bringing my full self, heritage included, into my professional identity

This is where my journey has led me and I’m proud of the work, the learning and the people who have trusted me along the way.

Even with years of experience, it’s normal to feel that flicker of self-doubt. The important thing is to keep learning and to recognise how far you’ve come. I’m stepping into this next decade, and this new website, with confidence, curiosity, cultural pride and gratitude for every client that trusts me to bring clarity to their world.
